Sophie Germain  was  a female French mathematician who lived during the late 1700's and early 1800's. For the most part, she was self taught. Her family did not support her pursuit of studying mathematics along with the general society of the time. So, to pursue her studies, she had to dress up as a man to attend university lectures as well as adopt a pseudonym.
